Perennial Forage Field Day

Join us for a field day on Tuesday, October 25th to kickoff the Lower Fox Perennial Forage project.  This project will highlight how perennial forages are a win-win for agriculture and water quality.  By adding cool-season European grasses to alfalfa plantings, agricultural producers can increase tonnage on their hay fields while maintaining a high quality feed. The grasses increase cover density across the field, providing benefits for soil health and water quality.

Over the next three years, the Alliance for the Great Lakes & several project partners will implement nearly 2,000 acres of perennial forages in the Lower Fox watershed.  Along with implementing the practice, we will research the economics, feed quality, and environmental impact of perennial forages.

Verhasselt Farms have been working with perennial forages for several years.  They will share their experiences with the practice in the field and incorporating it into a ration.  Daniel Olson (Byron Seeds) will also speak on his experience with perennial forages and share a recent forage quality test from the field we’ll be visiting.
